A great article which discusses the challenges faced in the US for cyber security. Could we see the DHS (CISA) in the US move to take responsibility for cyber security across all Federal Agencies? Having the skilled resources to build, grow and manage cyber security is a challenge for all public and private enterprises. With 137 Federal Agencies requiring cyber security services, centralising cyber oversight and assurance makes sense. But presents many challenges for the training, development, oversight and assurance of such a large enterprise.

I believe that there needs to be an appropriate balance between offensive and defensive cyber. For many years we’ve talked about threat intelligence and the role of cyber as an offensive weapon. But neglected the role of defensive cyber and the protection of the IP behind the firewall. Which has now initiated programmes such as Supply Chain Risk Management and CMMC. Defensive cyber is significantly harder and more expensive to accomplish it doesn’t just impact the public sector but drives up costs with the private sector to.

But if the estimated cost of the SolarWinds hack is $100Bn, then the cost of ‘defensive’ cyber would have been allot cheaper than the costs of remediation.
