A great post Brian D. McCarthy, as cyber regulation increases the burden being placed on the role of CISO is increasing. Yesterdays post on burnout being one such consequence.

While one cannot doubt that the role of the CISO is an enterprise business role, one has to ask how many CISOs will be able to take on such a demanding role. With the increased pressures of cyber regulation placing a significant legal risk and legal burden on the CISO. Supporting the board through oversight, assurance and attestation of cyber risk.

Cyber regulation is the paradigm through which cyber is and will continue to be managed. Legal and compliance risk are additional risks that cyber professionals are required to consider. U.S, EU and APC regulators are already moving towards cyber regulation of CNI, Financial Institutions, and Healthcare placing civil and criminal liabilities on boards for cyber compliance. Boards that CISOs would like to join.
