A great read, why Ransomware is a bigger issue than just locking you out of data. Take any analogy of theft and/or extortion. You have taken something of mine which I value dearly and you won’t give it back until I pay.
But why is ransomware different? Simply put, digital and data dependency. Data is woven into our government, corporate and social fabric. We cannot live without the daily data drug and our governments and corporate rely on it. We’ve used it for millennia, when we wrote down the designs for the pyramids, the first steam engines, railroads or electricity generators. Data is what ensures we innovate, develop and grow. The written physical page is so different to digital, books took time to propagate knowledge and we didn’t rely on them to make things work.
In a market place where many don’t understand cyber security, risk management and invariably their own data dependency. Is it time for increased regulation, the implementation of professional standards for firms who practice in this new market of risk remediation? Or where the consultants don’t have to have any formal qualifications to practice. With insurance products which target cyber risks appropriately?
