A great report on what and how Spain and Portugal lost power in April this year and the reluctance for power generators to provide information to help the investigation. The outage demonstrated how interconnected the EU power grid is, and how simple it was to affect the EU power network that cause the Spanish and Portuguese power outage.

Within a 30 minute window oscillations in power and frequency were felt in Spain and Portugal. Power oscillations were felt elsewhere across the EU power network. 3 generators in Spain switch off. Load balancing caused other power stations to trip off, causing the doom loop that shut down the Iberian power system.

There’s still no information available as to the root cause of the initial loss of power, or the power fluctuations across the EU. Or a system in place to manage what appears to be multiple simultaneous failures of power generators, that caused the cascade.

There’s now a political storm brewing between the power industry and governments as to why the event happened, what and who was to blame.
