A joint advisory by agencies in the United States, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Germany, Estonia, Latvia, Canada, Australia and Ukraine revealed Russia’s Unit 29155 is carrying out cyber operations globally. Since 2022, Unit 29155 has been targeting countries supporting Ukraine.

The UK government in its advisory, amongst other things asked

“The NCSC strongly encourages organisations to follow the mitigation advice and guidance included in the advisory to help defend their networks.”

It’s never to late, but the horse is half way across the paddock.

Along with China, Russia has a well structured, mature and highly effective cyber capability. It’s nation state threat actors have been supporting both proxies and criminals target countries with great effect. Launching cyber attacks that have collected intelligence, laid back doors and of course collected allot of cash.

The public and private sector has lost allot of ground in developing its cyber strategy, operations and resources ‘it won’t happen to me’, may be replaced with ‘what do I now do’. As insurers now look to governments as an ‘insurer of last resort’. All coming at a time of increased global tensions and economic uncertainty.
