Call us now:
A meeting held in the U.S yesterday between the heads of U.S, UK, Australian, Canadian and New Zealand security agencies discussed the threat of cyber espionage and theft of IP, by the Chinese state from their respective countries. The meeting presents a coordinated ‘call to action’ by the 5 eyes community for the protection of intellectual property and national, economic and societal security.
What will be done by nation states to deliver the message, few nations have taken the steps to enforce enforce national defensive cybersecurity. Putting in place the necessary regulatory frameworks to oversight, assure and attest cybersecurity and protect IP. National security agencies have had the luxury of being able to influence the management of kinetic security, they’ve had 100’s of years of practice. But cybersecurity has crept up on nations with growth in digital and they have been caught off guard, with little time for action.
Cybersecurity and the protection of national and corporate IP relies on the public and private sector, and its citizens. Everyone has the capability to inflict national damage through the PC in the bedroom, very few have an assault rifle by the bed. Chris Inglis hit the nail on the head 18 months ago when he said cybersecurity requires a ‘Whole of society approach’, he is correct.
With some countries regulating the cybersecurity of their private sector, what will other nations do? This week the UK withdrew corporate governance legislation, requiring UK industry to demonstrate the management of material risks and controls. At a time when partner nations are doing the opposite, and introducing cybersecurity governance for capital markets, CNI providers and Financial Institutions?
Will we do more than issue guidance?
