On the UK Corporate Governance Code. The UK Corporate Governance Code applies in the main to financial years starting January 2025. A Key principle includes the strengthening of Audit, risk and control. Including amendments to make board responsible not only for establishing, but also for maintaining the effectiveness of, the risk management and internal control framework. Boards should monitor the company’s risk management and internal control framework and, at least annually, carry out a review of its effectiveness. The monitoring and review should cover all material controls, including financial, operational, reporting and compliance controls. While the code is not mandatory the UK Financial Reporting Council requires board to comply or explain why they have to have not adopted the principles.Irrespective of not being mandatory, the direction of travel for board governance is set. Global regulators are focused on holding board accountable for the oversight and assurance of risk, including cyber and AI.
