Call us now:
A very powerful article by Jake Bebber and one that we should take note. Cyber strategy in the West is and has been years behind that of our adversaries. We have opened up our networks and enabled the theft of our defence IP, to the extent that adversaries have identical weapon systems technology to our own. Yet we have known about the problem, created appropriate regulation and consistently failed to enforce it.
Our cyber strategies have mostly focused on offensive cyber at the expense of defensive Cyber. Strategies that have shown no sign of harmonization between partner nations, strategies that need integration between the military and the private sector to protect both the battlespace and the national security interests of security partners and strategies, that have been left to regulators to now contend and enforce.
As a founding member of the CMMC AB standards working group and a recipient of a minor U.S Presidential award for my involvement. I have asked many times how will the U.S coordinate and manage the cyber oversight and assurance of existing cybersecurity requirements and how will it coordinate cybersecurity risk management between U.S and international DIB partners. See page 322 of the 2023 NDAA signed by the House of Representatives.
As the article points out we need a radical rethink to address cybersecurity risk management and the clock is ticking. In ones opinion we need more stick, less carrot and a concerted effort to enforce existing compliance and standards, we have all the tools we need. We just fail at applying and enforcing them, it’s not rocket science, but if it were we’d probably have the IP stolen anyway.
