An article that further reinforces the challenges the U.S faces with data security and its impact on national security. The U.S Government Accountability Office (GAO) has reported several times on the loss of defense IP both domestically and from its global DIB. Despite the U.S implementing contractual requirements through DFARS, requiring defense contractors to secure Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI).

Securing CUI data has been required by DIB contractors since 2017 under through the implementation of NIST SP 800-171. Data that sits below the requirements of defense contractors to secure Secrete and Top Secrete information. Data that has been acquired through traditional espionage and cyber espionage (GAO reports).
