An important update from NATO on the escalating threat of cyber attacks on Port Infrastructure. The enclosed is a comprehensive read on the threats and threat actors that pose a great risk to the Ports of NATO members. Highlighting the need for port operators to be prepared for cyber attacks and have effective responses.
The report details the most recent cyber attacks against port infrastructure and the number of ransomware attacks against maritime organisations. Highlighting the ongoing and critical threat ransomware attacks pose to the maritime industry.
One has to remember that at least 80% of World trade by volume is transported by the Maritime industry. This alone makes Maritime cyber an opportunity for state sponsored hackers focused on geopolitical and national security focused cyber attacks.
One suspects that the NATO Alliance Maritime strategy from 2011 likely needs revising, to address the bigger threat that cyber poses over physical attacks.
As I wrote back in 2023 with Peter Thornton, EU NIS 2 is focused on the management of cyber risk by the Maritime industry. Requiring Port operators, ship operators and the maritime construction firms address the implementation of cybersecurity risk management.
