An interesting report on the state of the CISO market, primarily in the U.S. Stress and Burnout are still significant issues for CISOs. But changes are starting to take place as CISOs progress towards the board room, as regulation develops that requires boards to take more executive accountability and responsibility for cybersecurity risk management.
Many CISOS emanate from Financial services, with a technical background. 77% of CISOS are spending at least 3 years in role, with those who have been in their role for less than a year coming from a previous CISO position. One suspects that demand and supply is the reason that CISO salaries are being driven up. The Median salary has increased 15% from $509K to $584K in the past year. With Salary being used to attract new CISOs.
The challenge that is ahead for CISOs, and not discussed is one of regulatory accountability. As CISOs aim for the board, regulation is catching up with the board room, that will change the role of the CISO, requiring alignment between 1st, 2nd and 3rd Lines of Defence. Enforcing cybersecurity risk management regulation, impacting the role of the CISO and their legal and regulatory accountabilities. That will be tested in court and may not be supported by D&O, but lets wait and see.
