As Russia moves to tighten control over its internet and firewall off the rest of the world, there’s a fight taking place over control of its Darknet. But why care? Quite simply put, for all of us, the Dark-web is where the bad digital stuff variably starts and tops. It’s the place that has traditionally been difficult for law enforcement to go and track everything from communications about drugs, money laundering, people trafficking, child porn, cyber and more.
Controlling the lucrative Dark-web and the market places within it, is control over the flow of opportunities and money that the illicit trade generates. For example cyber crime has been likened to the drugs trade with 90% profit margins, making it more profitable that cocaine production.
Creating and controlling the market place where illicit trade takes place and the liquidity to transform the sale of drugs, people, weapons and information generates income equivalent that was predicted to be above 1% of GDP by 2020. Owning a market place that facilitates these transactions take place is very lucrative. One has to ask how the transactions are converted in to cash?
