Back in late 2023 UK parliament wrote a report on the state of UK cybersecurity. It was not good then and there’s a debate as to how good it is now.

The U.S and EU have regulated cybersecurity to levels that UK industry will find difficult to meet without guidance. Levels that simply do not compare to cyber essentials by orders of magnitude.

‘The Government’s own Cyber Breaches survey also found recently that only half of surveyed medium-sized businesses and 59% of large businesses had even heard of the NCSC’s Cyber Essentials standard in 2022, let alone implemented it.’

One has written many times on the challenges ahead for UK industry as our partners drive cyber regulations into their national legal frameworks. If we cannot get more than 1% of UK business to accept cyber essentials, and that is considered a success. How will UK industry and its supply chain adapt to EU NIS 2, DORA or the SEC final cyber rule.

Last week the U.S Government finalized CMMC, a cyber program affecting the UK defense industry directly. A program requiring covered entities submit a certificate of compliance from an independent assessor to the DoD. Or lose a contract award, with the possibility of fines.
