Banning ransomware payments is a bit like banning Kidnap and Ransom payments. It’s the right thing to do, until your family is being held hostage. Banning ransomeware makes great headlines. But until there’s an alternative it won’t or cannot happen.

By the time you’ve been Ransomed it’s highly likely your data’s gone, the horse has bolted and you’ve lost the upper hand in a negotiation. Also one must not forget that it’s not just the data thats been Ransomed it’s likely systems in their entirety.

The U.S DoT released an OFAC advisory 2021 making clear ransomeware should not be paid. All it takes is for it to be enforced, to make a difference. Why’s it not been enforced?

Implement regulation, then there’s a foundation for banning ransomware. Until then what’s the alternative?
