Bryan Foss you don’t have to look far to see the effects of cybersecurity and the possible costs of cyber attacks on an organisations financial statements and the broader costs that can occur to society. The past 5 years have revealed major cyber attacks across the globe and significant ICT events, that have made many column inches. Yet we still seem to be sitting in this ‘it won’t happen to me’ cycle.
It’s always interesting to hear corporate leaders come out and talk about cybersecurity and cyber incidents, when cyber incidents have happened to them. The need for change, when they are under a spot light both politically, financially and by society.
Nothing in cyber is ever simple, but one wonders the conversations that were taking place around the Marks and Spencer boardroom table prior to and post easter 2025. One wonders if there would have been calls for all companies to report cyber incidents, discussions about the deficit in UK cyber knowledge, the lack of UK cyber resources, and contrition about the lack of emphasis on cyber risk management.

Yet one only had to look West at the UnitedHealth Group, MGM, CDK Global hacks or look in the UKs own back garden with the Synnovis or Peter Green Chilled hacks to confirm World Economic Forum stats that place cyber in the top 5 global risks.
The M&S chair is right, the UK is grossly behind the curve in every aspect of cyber including political ownership; a lack of a defensive strategy; regulatory frameworks that enable public and private sector ownership and management; national reporting, and a lack of skilled resources. All at a time when the UKs counterparts across the EU, U.S and APAC are addressing these concerns as cyber attacks threaten national and economic security.
When is the UK going to listen and make the necessary changes to cybersecurity strategy, policy and regulation? That will take years to implement?
