Building owners should be concerned, but insurers more so. If building services are compromised tenants cannot work, or in the most extreme circumstances if OT devices are compromised it could result in damage to the property. Worst still as we move towards smart cities and building operators use cloud, without understanding the shared responsibility model liabilities rise significantly.

The accumulation losses that cyber creates for the insurance industry are just starting to be realized. The insurance industry needs to find a solution to address the potential liabilities, and treat cyber as a significant risk to both the insured and insurer. Pricing and coverage won’t sort this out.

Could the potential accumulated losses of a cyber attack on a commercial property leave a self insurance gap far bigger than the cost of the building.
