Copper is playing its part on the global stage, at a time when geopolitical tensions following the Ukraine-Russian conflict are high. This is the second ransomware attack reported by the copper industry in the past 3 months, with Europe’s largest copper producer Aurubis reporting a ransomware attack in October. One could say that the hackers seem to be following the supply chain from the miner to the smelter.
Copper is an increasingly important metal, used among other things in renewable energy production, electric vehicles and energy storage technologies. With commodity producers being a increase popular and easy target as resources are consumed by other industry sectors. This years Iranian Foundry hack claimed by Predatory Sparrow demonstrated the catastrophic impact a cyber attack can have on physical infrastructure.
One hopes that the problem can be easily resolved before there’s a knock impact to commodity pricing.
