Cyber attacks on heavy industry and Critical National Infrastructure has been raised as a threat to national security. As recently reported, attacks by nation states are on the rise targeting Operations Technology (OT) and Industrial Control Systems(ICS).

OT and ICS systems are the soft under belly of our CNI. They manage the interface between the logical and physical, and control what and how things get made. Without ICS systems we would not have industrial automation and mass production as we know it today.

Importantly the financial model of much of our manufacturing is fundamentally based on a low margin, low profit, mass production model. That results in most manufacturers having low cybersecurity maturity. Making them an easier and valuable target for cyber attacks, in turn disrupting national security. As OT and ICS systems present a single points of failure.
