Cyber is a significant threat to healthcare, least of all the risk of data theft as cyber attacks frequency, complexity and severity are increasing. Regulators are driving cybersecurity risk management into healthcare providers in the U.S and EU.

EU NIS 2 requires healthcare providers implement cybersecurity risk management, the U.S Department of Health and Human Services set out cybersecurity standards for the healthcare sector (https://lnkd.in/d-CtT5K7). The New York State Governor recently set out cybersecurity requirements for all hospitals operating in the state. The U.S Federal Drug Administration has bought in requirements for the medical device cybersecurity.

Cyber attack frequency, complexity and severity are increasing and the legacy challenges that healthcare providers suffer enables hackers much easier access to systems and data than for industries such as Financial Services. That is a challenge for healthcare. Also at a time where there is a lack of resources across the cyber industry.

The very real concern is that as cyber becomes more of a national security threat, data theft and ransomware move quickly to data destruction and a threat to patient safety.
