Cyber regulation is making its way into many sectors. As of the 1st January 2021 the United States Coast Guard (USCG) expects that all companies with US flagged ships and foreign flagged ships to address cyber risk management in their Safety Management Systems (SMS). Shipping is a global lifeline with around 11 Billion tonnes of goods transported annually (https://lnkd.in/dqqDG9j). By way of example for the European Union, shipping accounts for 80% of total exports and imports by volume, and some 50% by value.
As with all modern systems, ships are digitally enabled platforms. With one big, very big, difference from your average car or plane. They are simply huge. Container ships can be up to 20,000 tonnes in weight, travelling up to 16–25 knots (30–46 km/h). A large floating weapon system.
Cyber risk management is therefore critical, without shipping the global economy stops and stops quickly. Or ships if attacked become environmental disasters or weapons.
