Cybersecurity in the public sector is a thankless task, even more so for mission critical systems such as nuclear. The November 2023 alleged hack against Sellafield was denied by many. Yet the UK governments nuclear regulator is pressing charges against Sellafield Ltd for IT security failures, and the head of security and the head of cyber step down. We’re treating cyber as a military discipline, when the reality is the private sector is more skilled at managing commercial defensive cyber. Why do we think the average Tier 1 bank spends over $400 million/ year on cyber, (and they don’t always get it right).
The UK needs a cyber Czar to cut through the complexity of cybersecurity in the UK. Government ownership of cybersecuirty is not clear; the UK cyber strategy is not aligned with out partners strategies and regulatory agendas; funding is poor; we don’t have the resources to manage cybersecurity risk; there to many ‘experts’ and market forces have failed to deliver protection. All at a time when cyber is a threat to national security.
