Delivering change is complex and the Big 4 have for many years supported clients deliver transformation programs. But as the FT article demonstrates, transformation has to be both strategically driven and it has to ‘stick’. Here in lies the challenge for cybersecurity risk management.

As we have seen in the U.S and EU strategic cyber advisory services haven’t always delivered value. It’s well documented that cybersecurity is being regulated due to the failure of market forces. Market forces that have included not only an over reliance on cyber tech solutions, but also no doubt on strategic services.

Successful transformation requires projects to ‘stick’ and for projects to stick they have to be owned locally and risk has to be managed locally. This applies directly to cybersecurity risk management, whereby risk cannot be owned by a consultancy. Risk must be managed by skilled, experienced and accountable local resources.

This is now being raised as a concern in Saudi. Where the reliance on the Big 4 has led to dependency on external resources, creating a lack of skilled resources in the region. Local skilled resources are crucial to economic prosperity, as cybersecurity has become a major threat to digital growth.
