Do the recently reported hacks on 5 law firms highlight a new chapter in the monetisation of cyber? They open up an interesting narrative on Maze the hacking group. How they are monetizing hacks and who may or may not be reporting cyber incidents. Paying on the quiet.
Maze names and shame those companies hacked on their website first; removing them when they get paid. They charge again to delete the data (doubtful). However, the more you dig the more companies you find who have been affected by Maze and with $1M to decrypt and $1M to delete. It’s a lucrative model.
There are reports that in the case of the law firms the data maybe being used for fraud, which is an additional revenue stream for the hackers. I would image the pool of data is sensitive given the law firms involved.
