Does the recent hack of Federal Systems tell us anything about cyber security maturity? As more information becomes available about the recent hack of Federal systems the size, scale and ingenuity of the hack is becoming clearer. There is as yet no confirmed tally of the number of Federal Agencies compromised or the depth to which the hackers went or the data accessed. But concerns have been raised about the breadth of data available to the attackers.
There were red lights flashing, but it would have taken a brave person to put their head above the parapet to highlight the issues. What is clear is the hack identified basic cyber and strategic supply chain security issues. Including software development, delivery, deployment and security practices.
Cyber security is complex and there are no short cuts. As we close one door another one opens and by focusing on defending the perimeter we are not focusing on what happens inside the network. This hack is a wake up call, if Federal Agencies can be compromised to the apparent scale, then there needs to be a rethink of defensive cyber strategy.
