Here lies the challenge and opportunity that AI presents, as the CEO of Eli Lilly David Ricks points out, AI is not ‘particularly good at solving biology or chemistry problems’.

AI today is great at telling us how to boil an egg or how to write a presentation. This is not a bad thing, however, as Goldman Sachs also pointed out, there’s ‘no meaningful relationship between AI and productivity at the economy-wide level.’

These two points highlight the issues with AI today. AI is replacing blue-collar roles within white-collar environments. It’s enabling better presentation writing (boiling an egg), but it struggles with replacing workof functions such as Internal Audit or Cybersecurity. Why, it’s down to the lack of tacit knowledge, experience, and understanding of cause and effect relationships.

If I think back to my time developing Knowledge-Based Systems and Engineering solutions for Rolls-Royce Turbine Manufacturing. Developing meaningful Machine Learning models requires an understanding of cause-and-effect relationships. Managing cause and effect requires an understanding of the function that links cause and effect together. What is the magic sauce that takes an input and transforms it into an output?

If you cannot accurately and repeatedly identify and manage cause and effect, build guidelines, and embed these into ontologically based domain-specific solutions. AI will find it difficult to reason to solve complex problems, as it does not understand cause and effect.

It’s a reason why AI won’t cure cancer just yet, or why AI won’t replace work that requires tacit knowledge and experience. Work such as the role performed by a foundryman, an internal audit, or cybersecurity. It’s a reason why insurers will never economically underwrite cyber insurance.
