I presented the topic of defense cyber at DSEI Japan last week, and would suggest that the cybersecurity of defense data is much bigger than Australia in the case of the AUKUS deal. The U.S is focused on the protection of Defence information and the protection of CUI across the global DIB. However the U.S GAO has demonstrated through several reports, that the loss of defense IP is an issue, enabling nation states to acquire weapon system data.

The protection of CUI has been the responsibility of defense contractors and subcontractors under DFARS regulations since 2017. However it has not been consistently adhered to by the DIB (GAO reports) resulting in the CMMC program.

The cybersecurity of defense IP is much broader that Australia, it covers DIB contractors across many countries. The media bank attack has demonstrated that Australia has recognised that it needs to improve its defensive cyber security, more so than many other countries.
