If there was any doubt of the power of AI then it has been demonstrated by 2 recent actions from the US Government this month. The first is the release of an Executive Order by the US President on ‘Promoting Advanced Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Security’. https://lnkd.in/eY9PzZ8W

The second is news at 5:31pm on the 12th June the US Government placed the latest AI models from Anthropic under export control, under national security authorities. The order from Federal Government suspends foreign nationals from using Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5. It also includes the suspending access to the tools by foreign national employees.

These move highlights the issues that AI is now creating for national security. Issues that are being created at a very fast rate, given the maturity of AI as a product. One cannot think of a case where a technology has been developed for mass public consumption so rapidly and had such a profound affect on security.

In the case of Anthropic, the export controls tells us allot about the power of AI tools and their ability, if they are miss-used, to cause damage to infrastructure. Allot has been reported on the use of AI tools to identify software vulnerabilities, less is reported on its ability to automate the ‘kill chain’ at scale; this is where the real issue resides, and why ‘jail broken’ AI is dangerous.

As a tool AI is being consumed at an unprecedented rate, integrated across our digitial footprint. AI has autonomy and is heading toward self determination, if in the case of the cyber kill chain, it is not already there. When you add this to poor cybersecurity risk management, then AI increases cyber risk.

AI is National Security.
