If they can find you and charge you, then penalties for cybercrime can be quite stiff. In this case Ukrainian Vyacheslav Igorevich Penchukov pleaded guilty to two charges relating to two separate indictments and was sentenced to 9 years. In addition he was order to pay $54million is restitution and $20million in forfeiture of funds.
While a win for law enforcement, there needs to be scale applied to law enforcement. The more cases that reach court, the more visible the sanctions, the less likely cybercrime is perceived to pay. Albeit there’s along way to go before this is the case.
