It is a pleasure to be included in the 2023 influencers edition of the International Security Journal (ISJ). Some not all the predictions made for 2023 have been realized. 2023 saw a significant increase in the frequency, severity and complexity of cyber attacks; The EU and U.S have moved ahead with cyber regulation with EU NIS 2, DORA, the SEC Final rule and as of last week the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA); we have seen security professionals face civil and criminal prosecutions for their management of security; nation state threat actors have taken advantage of poor cybersecurity and OT cyber attacks have increased.

The predications for 2024 hold some of the same, as cyber risk management regulation continues to transfer cyber risk into board rooms. Boards, accountable executives and security professionals will face civil and criminal liabilities for cyber risk management. Supply chain vulnerabilities will have a significant impact on many more companies and one hopes that we don’t have a significant cyber attack against Critical National Infrastructure in 2024.

Cyber is a significant risk to many organizations and 2024 will not see cyber risk diminish, only increase. Cyber regulatory enforcement will increase as those firms covered by the SEC final rule face increased regulatory scrutiny starting from December 2023.
