It would be nice to think that the recent cyber attacks against UK retailers is a wake up call for UK industry. However like many industry sectors (not just in the UK), that have suffered catastrophic cyber events (Equifax (2017), British Airways (2018), Marriott Hotels (2018), SolarWinds (2020), Colonial Pipeline (2021), MGM (2023), United Health (2024), CDK (2024), Synnovis (2024), Transport for London (2024)) non really caused a transformational shift in thinking. Its taken a mush harsher stance to get industry to stir from its coma (it ain’t asleep), as the EU and US move towards regulation over cybersecurity risk management. Even then boards are only just starting to shift in their seats. Until boards are held accountable to their fiduciary responsibilities will significant real world shifts take place.NCSC has an opportunity to lead this for the UK, but UK government has to decide that it wants change to take place. With the current economic climate one suspects that cyber is not a vote winner, least of all with business leaders that have historically pushed cybersecurity risk management down the cue and into the long grass.Cybersecurity risk management is a long term transformation program and one has seen no signs from UK Plc that its taking a long term view (not event short term). Whilst its allies seem to have stirred, considering cybersecurity risk management as a National Security Problem. It will take more than the current retailers woes to make UK industry stir, not being able to order bra or pants on line ain’t going to be it. Simply consider what happened with United Health in 2024. Shut down banking, power, water, oil, gas, communications, the internet or cause cyber related fatalities, then you’ll get peoples attention.@Thaddeus Dziekanowski Brian D.
