Its always been an issue for IT and security professionals. Can I identify all my IT assets? The ones I know I bought and those which someone else in the company bought, but may not have told anyone. For example the website which was spun up on a cloud server which is being used to run a survey, collect marketing information or that Raspberry Pi which has been connected to the estate to run infrastructure support, out of hours.
It’s not a new issue, but we are now moving into an era of the Internet of Things where it is predicted that there will be at least 4 IOT devices for every person on the planet by the end of 2020 (28 Million devices) and growing.
It is important that we maintain one of the core principles of cyber security. That is, know and control all your assets, ensure that you manage their access to networks and data and ensure that you are able to monitor their use appropriately. Its not easy.
