I’ve seen the ‘Knights of Old’ on the road over the UK for many years, a family firm founded in 1865. It is sad to hear that they have gone bust following a cyber attack on their parent. We hear of so many cyber attacks in the U.S, EU and Australia yet we rarely hear of attacks in the UK. Why is that, is the UK so good at cyber, is cyber essentials the model to save the UK, or do we just not report attacks and prey really hard?

It’s such a shame that Knights of Old went under and the loss of 700 jobs. OK the assets have been acquired and no doubt contracts transferred. But the effects never change. Why does the UK lag so far behind its partner nations on cyber. I read a report yesterday that made clear that boards, not just those in the UK, have created so much inertia for cyber. Inertia that is going to break, as U.S and EU regulators start to implement regulation that will effect UK trade. They won’t be prepared, they will be running around looking for help, help that will be like trying to find the foul from a Rocking horse and Unicorn. (read the regulations if you don’t believe me)

One hopes that the Knights attack is one of few, but suspect that this will not be the case. Firms do not have long to address the U.S and EU cyber regulation, that is coming. Regulation that for some covered entities comes with civil and criminal liabilities. Regulation that aims in the long run to prevent 150 year old firms going to the wall needlessly.
