I’ve written several times about the GAO reports that formed the foundation for both U.S DoD DFARS and CMMC programs, and the implementation of cybersecurity. The GAO identified issues in DoD weapon system cyber security back in 2018, and is working to address them through the DoD interim final ruling 2019 D041 and CMMC.
The DoDs International supply chain DIB contractors and the DoD must work to ensure that both defense manufacturing processes comply with DFARS, and weapon system design address the complexities of cybersecurity design and implementation. As yet I am not aware of any solution to provide oversight, assurance by the DIB across supply chains as required by DFARS 252.204-7012 and compliance evaluation over the international DIB.
As the enclosed article points out, cybersecurity is a strategic differentiator. But the delays in compliance have created issues for Federal government and the DIB, as the cost of compliance and time to comply will hinder the compliance process.
