Lets not put ‘rose tinted goggles’ on here. We may have moved to a point of no return with cybersecurity, and the threat it poses to national, economic and social security. Scattered Spider is working with nation state threat actors. Targeting retail is just a ‘nice little earner’, demonstrating proof of concept.
The costs of cyber attacks on the UK economy is not measured in real terms, but the cost of cyber attacks against companies is readily calculated in terms of the costs to financial statements and market cap.
Lets not think that cyber threat actors are motivated by bragging rights, it belittles the very real threat that cybersecurity has on national and economic security. If a hacker be it a 15 years old script kiddie or a nation state threat actor can break into systems and go un-detected. They can do pretty much what they want. If you can ransom data, you can destroy data.
There’s no ‘Robin Hood’, or ‘Scarlett Pimpernel’ here, it’s hard cash and proof of concept. Cyber is a well executed and successful business model and it don’t take a lot to move from cyber crime to nation state threat and back again. Given the nation state ‘pre-positioning’, that has reportedly already taken place.
It’s incumbent on public and private sector boards to manage cyber risk and for governments to support them.
