Like all jurisdictions cyberattacks that originate from out side a country, can affect those within a country, 1,000s of miles away. It’s what cyber is and what cyber attacker do, it’s not novel and its not unknown.
The question however is why do governments and boards ignore the issue? Cyber attacks on the health sector are well documented; cyber attacks on third party suppliers are well documented, and for some jurisdictions the leaders of healthcare organisations (such as UnitedHealth Care) are called to account for their actions, or inactions, to manage cybersecurity and may face civil and criminal penalties.
One asks, what is the UKs cyber strategy? When will the UK government invest money into the oversight, assurance, education and management of cybersecurity as a defense capability. One wonders Faisal Khan when cyber strategy and governance will be enforced across public and private sector boards in the UK, as in the U.S and EU.
The attack on the NHs in early June is having consequences. The boards of several affected trusts knew of the cyber and third party supplier risks. The parent company of the third party supplier was hacked earlier in the year. Makes you wonder if boards of trustees really understand cyber risk Brian D. McCarthy and @Thaddeus Dziekanowski.
