Lock down has made life very difficult for UK Universities. Domestic students are at home not able to attend classes, Universities are unprepared for on-line tutoring and students are not particularly happy about paying tuition fees to study at home. This has put significant pressure on many institutions with 13 facing bankruptcy. Many are dependent upon overseas students, who bring much needed funding. But are we in danger of giving away valuable research through academic partnerships and are we between a rock and a hard place?
One of our nearest defence partners the USA has tightened supply chain security through its National Defence Authorisation Act 2019, section 889. Baring the use of certain telecommunications equipment, software, and services from manufacturers owned, controlled, or connected to the Government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The DoDs CMMC programme will impose significant cyber security controls on the US Defence supply chain and it includes Universities who conduct DoD research.
