One wonders how this squares with the EU, U.S and Australia introducing broad reaching cybersecurity regulation under EU NIS 2.0, DORA, The ONCD National Cybersecurity Strategy, Australian cybersecurity laws and DoD DFARS program?
GDPR affects only one data class, PII. The proposed cyber regulation affects all data classes that includes PII. Cyber regulation from outside the UK has a profound impact on the UK’s ability to trade with partner nations and current UK cyber strategy and standards do not reach the same bar as those of our allies. Reading a recent review on the costs the UK incurs on ITAR compliance and concerns over the impact on the UK economy, what do we think the costs of compliance to U.S, EU and Australian cybersecurity regulation will be?
While I accept national security arguments for cybersecurity control, oversight and assurance. I’m afraid that regulations set from outside of the UK have commercial implications on UK trade and industry. One simply has to look at the U.S DoD DFARS/ CMMC program, if you don’t comply, the DoD can decide not to buy. One thing the past 3 years has taught me is nothing overtakes the U.S position over national security and the protection of the warfighter. Least of all our cybersecurity posture.
