Skunk works on Steroids: This is one to watch if you are in cyber, procurement and manufacturing. As the US DoD has taken a new approach to the design, development and testing of its defence systems. In this case, it appears that it has taken a new aircraft from concept to flight tests in a very short period, in what it sees as an approach to radically cut the lead, cost and increase efficiency of technology development.

Why an interest in cyber, procurement and manufacturing? Simply put IP and its protection. Given past issues with DoD product development, one can only assume that the IP created for this pilot programme is well secured across the DIB involved in its development. As there is obviously a lot at stake, turning around advanced weapon systems very quickly provides for competitive advantage. Programmes such as this only work with the use of digitally connected platforms, supporting design, modelling, testing, manufacture and collaboration.

But as programme move from the R&D to production phase, supply chains grow, data flows grow it becomes harder to manage and secure.
