Some have said it is the most expensive data breach in history, especially if one considers both the financial cost and the possible loss of life.

The UK’s national auditor, the National Audit Office, has reported this week that it has no idea what the total costs of the breach will be. The estimated resettlement cost of £850 million cannot be justified by the MoD. The MoD did not account for the costs separately. Other estimates, as high as £7 billion, cannot be justified either.
