Thank you Bryan Foss for posting. Four people have been arrested in connection with the Marks and Spencer and Co-op cyber attacks. The four individuals (script kiddies) are 20 years of age and under. Apprehended under the computer mis-use act.
These four do not appear to be nation state threat actors or proxies. The were not holed up in a hostile state, the attacks were likely perpetrated from bedrooms or coffeeshops. With nothing more sophisticated than a laptop, internet connection, access to a RaaS (maybe), and the knowledge and skills to launch a cyber attack.
The damage caused to the 2 retailers will be calculated well into the £100s millions and when one considers the damage they caused. One has to ask what industry is doing to secure itself. If script kiddies can wipe £100s millions from market cap, cause £100s million in damages (M&S) or destroy a brand. What could a nation state threat actor or proxy do?
When do we get real about cybersecurity, when do boards address cybersecurity?
