Thank you Shaun van Niekerk, CISSP. It is a bold move by AWS to enter the cyber insurance market, in a clear drive to entice customers onto the cloud platforms. There are advantages and disadvantage with cloud, cloud if done well is a secure platform. ‘If done well’ requires organizations to have a very clear understanding of their data and applications, remembering that cloud providers only manage a fraction of the security controls needed by many firms today through the share responsibility model today.

With the rapid developments in cyber regulation pushing cyber governance and risk management left of bang, cloud provides an opportunity to centralize cloud controls and consolidate security reporting. The proof will come within the small print and hacks take place ‘on prem’, affect ‘off prem’ and the shared responsibility model was found to have been at fault.

We have to remember that risks can be managed by cloud, but they are still be owned by the board.
