The annual World Economic Forum outlook on cybersecurity is always an interesting read. Least of all it charts the development of cybersecurity over the past few years. The development of cyber as a threat. The global trends for cybersecurity and the success in managing cybersecurity risk (not great).
The 2024 report is no different. It presents a concerning continuum, demonstrating that cybersecurity continues as a threat that many boards still do not understand. That boards do not put enough effort into understanding. The cyber risk opportunities and threats that companies that do not focus on and the increasing adversarial threat.
The 2024 report highlights the relationship between Geopolitical tensions and the flexibility by which geopolitics shifts the cyber risk paradigm. The lack of cyber skills and its impact on cyber inequality between SMEs and large companies.
Worryingly the report highlights the resource, knowledge and skills gaps of business and cyber leaders and cybersecurity risk management. A gap that organisations covered by U.S and EU cyber regulations will be required to close, if they are to comply with cyber regulation.
