The Australian Government legalised the reporting of cyber ransomware payments under their 2024 cybersecurity Act, with enforcement commencing this weekend.

As we sit and watch cyber attacks unfolding in the UK including Marks and Spencer the Co-op and Peter Green Chilled distribution. The need for board governance over cybersecurity risk management beyond simple guidance is obvious.

One cannot hide behind the argument that reporting cyber incidents makes it harder for companies to mitigate cyber incidents. What makes cyber incidents hard to manage is the lack of board governance over material cyber risk ‘Left of Bang’, instead relying on ‘Right of Bang’ risk mitigation.

One asks when will such reporting obligations become regulation in the UK.
