The Canadian government is one of the first national governments to move ahead a program to safeguard the Government of Canada’s unclassified contractual information held on defence suppliers’ networks, systems, and applications. In line with the existing and proposed U.S DoD DFARS requirements. Modeling its own program after the existing NIST standards, to ensure close alignment with current and future cybersecurity programs.
In the announcement Canada recognizes both the dependance its defense industry places on the DoD, and the need to secure defense information that is important to national security. By moving forward and developing a cybersecurity program for its defense industry, one suspects that Canada recognizes that a cyber secure defense base provides competitive differentiation to industry.
With Canada realizing the opportunity for closer alignment with the U.S defense cyber standards, the SEC final cyber ruling (that effects defense organizations listed in the U.S) one wonders how other nations will react. As the U.S moves to improve the harmonisation and standardization of cyber standards, through amongst other things regulation and trade.
