The conversation is not just about cyber crime as a strategic threat, cyber crime is a ‘right of bang’ issue. The biggest issue with cybersecurity is one of compliance and the current state of apathy in many countries does not place cyber crime high on many peoples agenda.

I would suggest that the biggest ‘strategic threat’ to the UK at the moment is one of cyber compliance, and a lack of a cybersecurity strategy that aligns with international partners. The U.S, EU and Australia have very robust cyber standards and programs yet suffer cyber attacks, and in response the EU and U.S are embarking on cyber strategies and regulations.

The UK has fallen significantly behind other comparable nations on cyber and we talk about Cyber Essentials, in the hope that it is a solution. But think of it like this, the U.S DoD requires global DIB contractors to comply with 110 cybersecurity practices, cyber essentials requires compliance to 6 practices. DoD cyber compliance is mandated in contracts, is being tested in court and the DoJ is gearing up its civil cyber fraud initiative to test compliance, that has no safe harbor.

A final thought about cyber threats to the UK. What happens when UK partners use cyber compliance as a bar for trade? For example failing to comply to DoD cyber requirements can result in penalties including losing a DoD contract. Earlier this year the UK got a mention in the 2023 NDAA about its lack of compliance to U.S DoD cyber standards.

While we are a physical we are not a logical Island and cyber regulatory compliance is on its way. We do not have the strategy and tools to deal with it and U.S and EU cyber standards are setting a bar for compliance that UK organisation should be aware. The regulatory focus is on cybersecurity risk management and forcing cyber compliance into UK Board rooms.
