The cyber attack against Marks and Spencer is taking a turn for the worst, as it is being reported that some stores are now being left with empty shelves. That could point to a take down of its ERP system, a system that is the core of the operations of a company such as M&S.The challenge with cyber is that we spend far to long sitting Right of Bang, in the land of its not going to happen to me, or my insurer will pay. When the focus should invariable be ‘Left of Bang’, working through cybersecurity risk management and taking proactive steps to mitigate cyber risk. Cyber is to significant a risk for it not be be considered as a board risk management and governance problem. As was presented by George Kurtz at the RSA conference, cyber is a board issue.Cyber risk management has a profound effect on financial performance both left and right of bang. Its way cheaper to invest in proactive cyber risk management, Left of Bang, than suffer the consequences right. As is now being felt by M&S and its shareholders, that have seen £500m wiped off its value since the start of the attack, add to that the costs of the attack and the impact on customers who see bear shelves. The lesson to be learnt is that board governance over cybersecurity risks is way cheaper than playing Russian Roulette with Script Kiddies (in the case of M&S). Or at least the cost of implementing a cybersecurity risk management program. @Thaddeus Dziekanowski Brian D.
