The cybersecurity industry and their clients are caught in a difficult place. Having to reduce operating costs in line with falling sales, at a time when the effect of cyber regulation is starting to kick in. Be that the SEC final cyber rule, DoD CMMC or EU NIS 2 and DORA. But, as I remarked in the Wall Street Journal last month (https://lnkd.in/eE7Mmxpp), things are changing.

Cyber regulation will rebalance the cybersecurity market place as boards and executive leadership teams are required to attest to their companies cyber compliance and increased legal and compliance risk. Given the recent noises from U.S lawyers on D&O insurance, cyber is certainly no FUD debate. Cyber risk management is crystalizing into an issue for board members and CISOs, as they demonstrate they understand their material cyber risks and report material cyber incidents.

Going forward CISOs and boards will be selective. But the focus will be on demonstrating regulatory compliance. The cybersecurity industry is going to have to provide products and services that support the mitigation of material cyber risks, and keeping boards out of the regulatory spotlight. Those that can, will likely be knocking on open doors.
