The Federal Communications Commission is a very influential regulator in the U.S. It regulates U.S interstate and international communications through cable, radio, television, satellite and wire.

As of 6th February 2023 equipment identified as covered will be prohibited from obtaining an equipment authorization from the FCC, on the grounds of “public safety, security of government facilities, physical security surveillance of critical infrastructure, and other national security purposes.”

If affects telecommunications and video surveillance equipment produced by Huawei Technologies Company (Huawei) or ZTE Corporation (ZTE), Hytera Communications Corporation (Hytera), Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Company (Hikvision), or Dahua Technology Company (Dahua) or by any subsidiaries or affiliates.

It is a further move that focuses on the adoption of equipment produced in China, sold and distributed in the U.S. One can expect further moves that focus on ICT security as both the U.S and EU focus examine regulation that require the manufacturers of ICT products and services to provide a certificate of cybersecurity compliance, before they can be sold or distributed.
