The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) mission is a U.S agency with a role in the enforcement of civil U.S. antitrust law and the promotion of consumer protection. Taking a keen interest in cybersecurity products, services and consumer protection.
The FTC has a track record of building case law relating to cybersecurity, as pointed out in the article the $575 fine for Equifax failure to safeguard consumer information levied in 2019. So it should come as no surprise that the FTC is focusing on cybersecurity regulatory oversight and cybersecurity risk management. At a time when other U.S regulators are doing the same.
For the FTC to start to address the question of ‘reasonableness’ is important. Reasonableness sets a bar, albeit organisation and risk specific, the FTC expects U.S organisations to focus in managing cybersecurity risk.
