The recent release by the White House of the National Cybersecurity Strategy, the Securities and Exchange Commissions (SEC) proposals for cybersecurity risk management and EU’s cyber regulation sets out the direction of travel for corporate cybersecurity risk management. By way of example this week the SEC released cybersecurity proposals for cybersecurity risk management of U.S capital markets including brokers, dealers, systems compliance and integrity and customer record protection.
The ONCD strategy proposal will have a long term impact on corporate boards. The proposal sets the foundations for cybersecurity regulation for the U.S, to enable the defense of its digital ecosystem. Core to this is the role that corporate America plays in protecting CNI. EU Cyber strategy and regulation follows a similar path, focusing on the cybersecurity risk management of CNI, financial services and ICT product and services.
The U.S and EU are driving cybersecurity risk management requirements into the boards of organizations that create systemic risk for others and want boards to take more accountability and responsibility for cyber. Transferring liability from end users to the creators of cyber risks.
